The sun's energy is absorbed by the collector which then transfers the energy to the glycol/water mixture. This is then circulated and brought down to the heat exchanger. The heat is then transferred through the exchanger and into the  water inside the tank where it is stored.

When hot water is used in the home, it is supplied from the regular hot water tank which replenishes itself by drawing in cold water from a well or municipal water source. Heating the water takes a lot of energy. A solar hot water system pre-heats the water, and greatly reduces the workload of your primary heating system.
