Is Solar Energy Reliable?

Before you invest in solar power, you must first make sure whether it is a reliable source of energy. There are concerns about whether solar energy can be feasible and whether it can provide an uninterrupted supply of energy to your house.


Solar energy has proven to be a more reliable energy source than fossil fuels since its widespread adoption. Solar-generated electricity is a reliable energy source, with components that rarely fail and are backed by long warranties. It also has another advantage: it is beneficial to your wallet. How reliable are the solar panels?

According to a recent National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) study, solar panels are extremely reliable and have a long lifespan. Between 2000 and 2015, 54,500 panels were placed, according to the study. They found that only 5 panels out of 10,000 failed each year. That’s 1 in every 2,000 solar panels. That means that solar panels have a failure rate of only 0.05%, which implies they are extremely reliable. Given that we are now in the 2022s and manufacturing technology has evolved, you can be confident that the current failure rate is even lower!


What happens if my solar panel fails?

Solar panels’ high level of reliability allows solar panel manufacturers to offer power output warranties of either 25 years or 30 years. In other words, the odds of your solar system experiencing failures are extremely unlikely. And if it does happen, you’ll be covered by the warranty and the panel will be replaced free of charge. The panels are durable and require minimal investment for maintenance and repairs, if any.


How will solar energy work without sunlight or at night?

Since solar panels depend on the sun they won’t be much good at night and will produce less energy depending on the season. Luckily, there are two easy ways to overcome this obstacle:

  • Net metering: A law known as net metering requiring utilities to compensate those who export excess solar power to the grid. In most cases you will be credited at the same rate you purchase power at on a cents per kilowatt-hour basis.
  • Batteries: Your solar panels will charge your batteries throughout the day and at night the batteries will power your home.


In most cases homeowners elect not to install batteries with their solar system. This is because net metering allows you to harness the economic value of your solar energy without the large financial investment in batteries.


The sun provides an infinite source of energy that does not deplete the ozone layer or degrade the environment. Solar energy would help to save scarce and nonrenewable energy sources while also protecting the environment. As a result, solar power is regarded as a reliable energy source and a sensible investment in the planet's future.
